This event, run by Tim Onions in conjunction with Abbey Adventures holiday club in Abbey School Torquay, will mean your child is supervised and looked after by the staff for the day and unlike most other chess events it will not be possible for parents to stay. During the day there will be timetabled activities, and we expect to include a chance for swimming in the school’s lovely heated indoor pool for those who would like, with a qualified lifeguard present as well as supervisory staff. Lunch will be provided. We will conclude the day with some crazy chess.
SECTIONS Under 9 (years 3 and 4) Under 11 (years 5 and 6) Under 13 (Years 7 and 8)
Please note age group based on age at 1st September 2019. Sections may be amalgamated if insufficient entries are received.
ENTRY FEE £25.00 includes lunch
PRIZES - these will be awarded to the first three places in each section. Other prizes will be awarded according to the size of the entry. Certificates will be awarded to all players.
PLAY will commence at 9.30am. Children will be supervised from 9am, and ideally need to arrive by 9.15am. The day will finish at 4pm with the prize giving; parents are welcome to arrive from 3.45pm if they wish to come to this. There will be supervised play in the school’s playground between games (weather permitting). Clocks will be used.
LOCATION The school is located next to the model village in the heart of St. Marychurch (use the council car park next to the school).
WHAT TO BRING Children may bring a mid- morning snack (no products containing nuts please – we have regular attenders with severe nut allergies) and will obviously need their swimming kit if they wish to swim, and a coat and suitable shoes for outside play.
ENTRY We are grateful to the Devon Junior Chess Association for agreeing to use their site to take entries and payments.
Please go to
to enter and make payment of £25.
Please make sure you fill in the section about your child’s swimming ability (the pool is 1.2 metres deep throughout).
Also please ensure you have let us know about any dietary requirements or allergies, and any medical information that we should know.
Closing date for entries – midnight on New Year’s Day. Given the time of year it would be really helpful for entries to be received before the Christmas break as this will greatly help with catering and staffing.
No e-mail or telephone entries can be accepted - sorry. Please note payment in full is due on booking. Once a place is booked we are unable to provide a refund in the event of cancellation or non-arrival. With notice we will be happy to swap the booking to the next Abbey chess event, subject to availability.
A list of those booked will be on the DJCA website.
