Sunday, December 9, 2018 – 09:15 Devon Junior Chess Championships 2018 The Devon Junior Chess Championships concluded yesterday.

For the first time in a long while we held the event in Exeter, in the hope of being more accessible to players around the county.  We would like to thank very much West Exe School for hosting the event in their splendid building, and of course Ashford’s for their support.

50 young chess players came to contest the places from schools across Devon.

Four separate individual competitions were held — under 9s, under 11s, under 15s and under 18s.  For some, it was their first tournament, while others have been playing for perhaps a decade already.  Trophies were awarded for the top three in each division, as well as Best Girl and extra age prizes (best under-8 in the U9s, for example).  Three of the sections had outright winners, but there was a remarkable three-way tie for first place in the U15s, featuring two players who were also the U14 age group winners.

The competition includes the Schools Team Competition, which this year was won by Exeter Junior School.

Each round was fiercely and sportingly contested, and the standard of the best games was a great credit to the skill and concentration of the players.

I would like to add a note of thanks to all who helped make the event run smoothly, a real team effort.

Saturday, January 11, 2020 – 20:30 Wales/West Junior Team Jamboree A tough day at the office for the U18s who all played their hearts out for poor rewards (6/18), but well done the U14s for coming joint second to the mighty Glamorgan team (16/30).

Many thanks to players, parents, supporters and volunteers, and thanks to Ian Eustis, Kevin Staveley and colleagues for another fine event.

Sunday, March 1, 2020 – 14:00 U14 squad post-jamboree review Chess isn’t the most important thing in the world nor is getting better the only goal in playing.  But if you do want to get better, how is this to be done?

  1. Step 1: what are your strengths and weaknesses as a player?
    1. Make a list of all the things a chessplayer needs to do (or avoid) to play well
    2. Look at the feedback from your games
    3. Look through the list of ‘tips’ from the booklet — what are you good at, what don’t make sense?
    4. What are the three most important things you could work on?
  2. Step 2: what is going to help?
    • I can’t make you a better player in an afternoon but I can tell you what will make you a better player!
    • We had available:
      1. openings booklets (including those listed on the secret webpage)
      2. tactics tests
      3. ‘paranoid’ tactics tests (where the result wasn’t known and you may fall into a trap)
      4. positional puzzles
      5. endgame puzzles
    • There’s more where they came from!

On the day, the sorts of things we decided to look at were:

  1. playing White against ‘dodging’ (if not dodgy) defences — half-open games and Indian defences
    • I recommend you pick systems that fit together — resulting in positions that have similar themes or at least ‘feel’ similar
    • We looked at how to play for and against an IQP
  2. Spotting tactics and avoiding blunders
    • Three sorts of puzzles are helpful:
      1. Puzzles that are a little bit hard for you — to extend your range and imagination
      2. Puzzles that are easy for you — to improve your speed at spotting simple tactics
      3. Paranoid puzzles — where you don’t know the ‘right’ outcome
        • These include the Hit/Miss/Trap collections from me
        • Practical Chess Exercises by Ray Cheng
    • You can also do exercises that improve your sight of the board
      1. like the 8 Queens puzzle
      2. I have 12 more examples as part of the card pack 52 different things to do than play chess
  3. Lastly, play, write your moves down, and review the game afterwards
    1. Review with yourself
    2. Review with a friend
    3. Review with a computer
    4. Send me the moves for comment — I will always do this for you

Sorry some of the sections were less than 6 rounds – Lichess couldn’t cope (and I think the U18s actually broke it)

Saturday, May 1, 2021 – 14:00 MayDay Junior Team Battle Devon juniors took part in an exciting all-comers team battle on Saturday 1st May on the lichess.org website, where we were outnumbered but not outclassed!

The teams from Devon, Berkshire, Hampshire and Dorset played for two hours.  The lead swapped hands rapidly in the first period of the match (faster than a countefeit note, someone remarked), but after the first half-hour Devon had built up a commanding lead of over 10 points ahead of their closest rival.  The scores for the top 6 players counted, so although other counties had longer team sheets, Devon’s quick win rate pushed them ahead and kept them there for most of the remainder of the battle.

Final scores and individual results (and all games): https://lichess.org/tournament/ZhmQxxcI

Saturday, July 17, 2021 – 14:00 County Junior Team Battle Hampshire, fielding a strong team, settled into an early lead and pulled away steadily all afternoon.  Devon came a creditable second thanks to some star performances from Luke, Niranjana, JunYi, Jake, Tom, Toby, Shreyas and Tejas.  All the other teams had at least one 2000+ rated player, while our top ranked team member was Luke started on less than 1800 (and he was unlucky to miss wins against the top two boards of Hampshire). Thanks to everyone that played and I hope you all enjoyed the event.
